He claims that he could never find Mary, but Frank's lawyer provides a laptop and runs a quick search for Mary's name to demonstrate that it would have been easy for the man to find his daughter if he'd actually been interested in doing so.

This makes Frank's mission to prevent her from deciding Mary's academic future more sympathetic and understandable. However, her relentless drive for her daughter to be an academic success led to her having an emotional breakdown after completing her life's work and then committing suicide as she lost all sense of purpose in life. Anti-Villain: Painting Evelyn as a villain comes with the genre for a film like this, but she remains vaguely likable throughout because of her sharp wit, the fact that she does love Mary in her own way, and the nagging suspicion that she is right about Mary needing a totally different kind of academic environment from the one Frank is providing her. Acting Your Intellectual Age: Mary has problems relating to other kids of her age because of her unchildish interests. Not to be confused with Gifted, The Gifted (2014), or The Gifted (2017). A chain of events is set in place that draws Mary's grandmother Evelyn (Duncan) back into her and Frank's lives after seven years, in a battle over Mary's future. When Mary starts attending school at the age of seven it is clear to her teacher Bonnie (Slate) that she is far beyond the other children in her class or even her own abilities as a teacher. Frank attempts to raise Mary to be as normal a kid as possible, but she has clearly inherited her mother's intellectual abilities, especially in the field of mathematics. In one scene, she asks him to tell her the truth about whether there’s a God. But, as his estranged mother, Evelyn ( Lindsay Duncan, playing her steely and British) insists: “She’s not normal and treating her as such is negligence on a grand scale.”įrank talks to the precocious Mary like she’s an adult – and she talks back like one. Her only friends are their adult neighbour Roberta (Octavia Spencer) and a one-eyed ginger cat named Fred and so Frank decides to enrol her in school so that she can learn to get along with kids her own age. Our whiz-kid lives with her uncle Frank (Chris Evans), a boat mechanic described, rather accurately, by one of the film’s characters as the Tampa suburb’s resident “quiet, damaged hot guy”. 
The unbearably cute, gap-toothed daughter of a deceased maths genius, she is the “gifted” subject of Marc Webb’s touching family melodrama.
